I have a 2000 Pontiac Montana that is losing power going uphill,hard to start, misfiring and backfiring but only occasionally. twice the o2 sensor code came up but they also suspect the cat converter they have said that we can't just do the o2 sensors because if it turns out to be the cat convereter they will have to replace EVERYTHING(Including o2) all over again, IS there any way to tell if it is the converter without cutting it out???!!! is it true I cannot just do the o2's??? I cannot afford to get $1,000 worth of work done if it is only the o2's, and NOT the cat, help anyone??? this is my only transportation!!

Have you checked the timing? And maybe a emission's test on the exhaust could give an idea of the converter's condition

How many miles is on it? Are you losing any coolant?

Federal Emissions warranty your Catalytic Converter for 8 years or 80,000 miles as well as your PCM or ECM.
If your 2000 has less than 80K or in service is under 8 years you are stille eligible for coverage at no cost to you.
Also, in todays market GM is offering Goodwill warranty on allot of repairs. If you maintained the vehicle and are not far out of the federal coverage of 8/80K the Dealer it is a viable option for the service manager to approve good will coverage.
I recommend persuing this option if you so desire.
