2000 jeep cherokee i-6 belt squeak

2000 jeep cherokee i-6 belt squeak

Had to replace the water pump on the cherokee and i replaced the serpentine belt as well. Upon doing so a squeak now is occurring
on start up ... but after the engine is warmed up the squeaking subsides... however when the system in loaded ie A/C is on, the squeaking
reoccurs.. also... the battery gauge needle on the dash dips. We replaced the tensioner pully bearing and that appears not to have had any affect on the problem. Could it be the alternator? or something else ? both the battery and alt have never been replaced

hi you need to ensure that the belt is the exact proper size , if it is a spring loaded tensioner make certain that it moves freely through its entire range with the proper amount of resistance (spring load ) , since you hav e also just replaced the water pump you will need to thoroughly clean , pressure wash all the pulleys and the belt preferably with hot soapy water . anti freeze on a belt = squeeky , slipping belt -it is the worst ,if it does not go away within a day of your thorough cleaning i would change the belt again ...good luck hope this helps you some ...............Todd ..from the hammer....GO BRUINS GO !!!

Just let me add one comment to what Todd has told you.
I have found that for some reason the Cherokee belt needs to be tighter than most due to the routing. Most of them are manual adjustment and have to be tighter than you's normally expect to get rid of all the noises. As Todd pointed out, spilling coolant on the belt is very important to avoid or at least clean real good. I find it nearly impossible to get out of the belt once it gets soaked though.

If fully tight enough now it could be belt the pulleys are just too shined up. Goodyear makes a "quiet" belt that helps but it stretches a bit faster and needs more adjusting!!
If all is well otherwise I use silicone grease (sounds silly but does work and won't make a belt slip after a break in) right on the belt and pulleys,
