Hi, my sister has a 2000 Ford Ranger XLT. The other day she ran out of gas. She put gas in it, started it and it sounded really bad. It was knocking and pinging like crazy. My husband and I went over to look at it today and it wouldnt start at all. Could it be a fuel filter? Where is the fuel filter on that truck? Could it be the fuel injectors? Are they cleanable or would we need to replace them? I appreciate any help. Thanks, Lizzy

There aren't many good excuses for running out of gas and it's usually habitual. My bet is this vehicle runs around much of the time on fumes and that is hard on the fuel pump and killed it. Test for fuel pressure will show.

Fuel filters get replaced not cleaned and most are on the frame rail,

Thanks Tom, you are probably correct in assuming that the truck is usually running around on fumes and she totally got a lecture on that one. Besides being bad for the truck its no fun being stranded and not very safe.Today she told me she actually made it to the gas station before it quit all together.
I understand that fuel filters get replaced and not cleaned. I was wondering how to or if you clean fuel injectors.
All that said, she had it towed today and the guys at the shop said that is not the problem. Apparently she had the oil changed at a cheapie, quickie oil change place and they put cheapie oil in it, too thin for her truck, so the guys at the shop think it could be much bigger than a fuel pump problem. They will not know till they dig deeper. Does that make any sense to you?

The running out of gas thing is such a hoot and I know folks who run around like that all the time with the excuse that they can't afford to put more in. My suggestion is don't drive at all then as you will be a pedestrian anyway so why not start out that way and save the tow!!

I do carry fuel for road call service (not recommended for folks in general to do that) and most of the time it was out of fuel by surprise with a malfunctioning fuel gauge. The others get a lecture!

Fuel injectors can be cleaned with mixed results. Best to prevent problems of course and periodic use of solvents in the gas can help with that. They are not so effective at fixing an existing problem.

The cheap oil should still meet min requirements. The viscosity used can matter but anything like 5-30 or 10-30 should be fine for this vehicle.

Electric motor don't like heat. Fuel pump is an electric motor and is temp moderated by the fuel itself. Other motors use air - just look at a table fan, your alternator (is kind of a motor in reverse) that need to stay cool or they fry. Starter motors don't do this as they just get used for seconds at a time as with PW motors etc.

My suggestion for all is to keep fuel at not less than 1/4 tank and fill it from there. This running around with a full tank all the time as I do does reduce fuel mileage becasue of the added weight of the fuel. However stopping to get just 2 or 3 gallons all the time wastes more.

What can you do?
