2000 Xterra weird feeling when braking Sign In

Ok, this is a hard one to explain. I have a 2000 Nissan Xterra. Whenever I brake and the car slows to just below 20mph or so the car makes a weird deep vibrating feel. Its hard to explain the feeling, the best thing I can think of is when you drive across those strips on the road designed to help warn you af an upcoming stop and the car has a rough tire sound to it. Does that make sense? Its not a screech or rattle, just a knobby tire type feel and I can hear it. The brakes are about 2-3 years old, I think. Also the ABS light randomly comes on. If I turn the car off and then back on sometimes it goes off. Could be related, not sure!

I know this is a bad description, just couldn't think of any other way to describe it!
Thanks!

OK, what your experiencing is the ABS brake system activating. The reason it does this is because one of the wheel speed sensors is inaccurate at low speeds and the ABS module sees that as a brake lock up and pulses that brake. You have to inspect the front wheels and speeds sensors looking for things like loose wheel bearings, damaged sensors or cracked or damaged exciter rings. Other than the obvious, you will need some professional equipment to diagnose which sensor it is.
