I have a 2000 Mercury Cougar V6 w/ 76k miles. After being driven for 15 mins or more the car will sometime losepower or buck upon acceleration, kinda feels like a misfire or it is not getting fuel. It only does this sometimes. If you cut the car off and start it again it will run fine again for a while, then start having the same problems again. When it is running good the tranny shifts fine and the engine does not smoke, run hot, or make any noises. The check engine light was on and the code was for a purge? valve or something like that. We had it replaced and the check engine light went off but after driving it about 10 miles it starting having the same problems again. HELP!!

It sounds like you are experiencing a secondary ignition misfire. You usually start with plugs and ignition wires but the coil can act that way too. You can't condemn the coil until you have good plugs and wires though. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Our 2000 Chevy venture appears to do the same thing. I describe it as a "hiccup". When our service engine light is on - the codes say that it is a crank shaft regulator or a valve. We have had those replaced, and the computer that controls those - and the problem still exists. Like you, the problem is only sometimes. We never have smoke or anything even during the "misfires". We have had the wiring checked - plugs - etc. Still, same problem! I will be curious to see if your issue is resolved - so that maybe ours can be too! I 2nd the emotion of "HELP!" Sorry I can't help you out- but at least you know NOT to go to the huge expense of replacing the computer that regulates the valves and regulators!

Hello, The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor causes hesitation upon acceleration. I am about ready to replace mine because my cougar does this as well. Will let you know. Autozone $70 plus core.
