2000 Mazda protege nightmare Sign In

      Car Profile: 2000 protege 1.6 L automatic 130k+

the "nightmare" began when i was driving with my beautiful girlfriend on an amazing spring day. sound nightmarish already. my transmission started to lurch on me. at cruising speed the whole car just lurched and the rpms dropped like a hammer. this immediately followed by the transmission slipping out of gear and the rpms revving like crazy.

since then i have found several causes of problems:

•the IAC valve is really screwy and seems to be gummed up
(for some reason freeing it from the intake hose and letting it dangle resolves this for the most part)

•EGR code which is not that strange considering mileage

•TOTALLY dead front engine mount
(replaced today but back of engine still moves significantly when shifting from D to R)

•TPS high voltage code P0123-
sensor repaced, no change in symptoms same code and blinking O/D light from this code. also checking the sensor and wiring visually and with multimeter everything checks out. but this is a continually monitored code and problem is intermittent. hasn't happened since replacing motor mount.

•a few bad front suspension elements. worst is a worn boot on ball joint on front right lower suspension arm. the rest is just some sad looking rubber elements.

all symptoms:

• hard shift from D to R sometimes from bad engine mounts, only front one replaced so far.

• erratic idle caused by IAC valve, temporarily under control for now

• transmission: slipping while shifting, hitting brakes, and turning. sometimes seems like while driving i can let my foot on the gas and the car will keep going on its own. it will slow down but much less than usual (this is probably the TP sensor).

Questions I have:

• if the TPS is fine and wiring to it is fine, plus when I move around the IACV some problems go away, should I suspect the wiring or harness on the IACV since they are on the same circuit routed to the ECM?

• Could the transmission slipping, grabbing, and flaring be the combination of bad info from the ECM and the free movement of the engine from bad mounts?

NOTE: i recently had the transmission flushed and filter changed. the original fluid looked fine and there were no metal shavings or sign of internal transmission problems. also one weird thing i found was that if i tugged a little backwards on the gas pedal the transmission would slip out of gear right away while cruising. my girlfriend's 2003 protege did not do the same when i did that to hers. this makes me even more suspicious that most of the slipping is caused by the bad mount.

• if this is the case am i being optimistic when I suspect my problems may disappear after i resolve those possible causes for trans. problems?

could any of this mean that my ECM may need to be replaced after all this?

I can post pictures later if necessary.

thanks for your help, i am at a loss. and i can't afford much more guessing and a new IACV is wicked expensive!
