2000 Kia Sportage keys Sign In

My friend recently dropped the only set of keys to my 2000 Kia Sportage in a sewer. The police wouldn't help us, but we were told to go to our dealer and they could. We went to the dealer and they remade me a key, except it didn't work on my car at all. We went back to the dealer and they redid the key again and it still didn't work. I could go to a locksmith, but it could cost me about $200. Does anyone know of another thing that could be done for cheaper? Also, does anyone know if the kia has a chip in the key?

Hi,

I would think that a 2000 kia would NOT have a chip in the key, because this was a new technology back then (scary 2000 was almost 6 years ago) but, you never know. I tried loking around the web and also on the kia.com site but had little luck.

I would think the dealer would know, since for them to make the key they need to know the cars information. Also you shouldn't have to pay for the remade key if it doesn't work.

A final thought would be have you tried to contact the local department of public works, to see if they could open the sewer for you?

Re: 2000 Kia Sportage keys Sign In

The specs for the keys that the deal has are wrong for some weird reason. Same happened to me when I wanted to make a spare key. The store made keys that were too thick. so i went to the dealer - same thing -- too thick and would not work. I went to a locksmith - he checked the books and said - yup the specs in the key copy books are wrong. So he matched it up with a micro-meter and was able to make me a working spare key --- did it for $5

Now in your case i suggest that you tell the dealer the specs are wrong and that they must goto kia corp and get their engineers to figure out the correct key specs for the 2000 kia and fix this problem

Note there are a few other replacement items for the kia that are spec'd wrong in the aftermarket - had to get a new gas cap - the non-kia one that the book says is the right size at autozone - is wrong too
