I'm new here. I SO appreciate any help! I'll try to make this short and simple. I have the vehicle in the subject line. It's a V6 and has about 110,000 miles on it. Because of the economy, we MUST have this vehicle running at least until my husband graduates in about a year and a half. It runs well and is safe and that's what matters. I have faith we can keep it going well for at least that long. It's been running a little sluggish lately. When I went for an oil change, I mentioned this. They didn't really check anything but said it would be standard and reasonable to get a tune-up which make sense to me. They gave me a price of about $250 for "plugs, wires, air and fuel filters." This includes labor. That's way out of our budget right now so I'm calling around for prices. Guy #2 said our vehicle (without looking at it, just giving a price on parts and labor) said our model doesn't have "wires" it has boots and the boots are about $30 ea. (needing 6). He said he would only CHECK those, not change them unless they needed it and for the filters and plugs plus labor it would be $150. So this makes no sense to me. Place #1 said wires not boots. Are they the same? If so, is #1 replacing the boots too but at a much better price thatn #2 can get the parts for? Do you see what I mean? I need to pay as little as possible but still get the correct job done. Since I'm not mechanically inclined (and they know this) I have to arm myself with knowledge and know what needs to be done and what a fair price is. Any help is VERY appreciated. Thank you!

Original equipment plugs for this are just $1.74 ea - that's your cost wholesale pricing. You should only replace coils or boots as needed not just because IMO. Air filter you should be able to figure out yourself and have a fuel filter installed.

Have the codes read as you are complaining about it not running its best and something other than normal tune-up is probably the cause. I really suggest periodic use of fuel injector cleaner and specifically like the one by Chevron called "Techron"

<< that one! I'd do a strong dose now if it's running fairly well with no codes (check engine light NOT on) now then go for the tune up parts - AND fuel filter. It may need injector cleaning but if running fair now might clear up with the treatment and then do the plugs and filters.

Price out your own parts but quality filters should be used over cheap ones. Plugs should be original equipment rated even if they are cheaper the vehicle was made for them - it counts! I personally don't think overspending or trying tricks with spark plugs is a good idea on most vehicles made after about 1996.

Just find the right shop with the history and wishes you have stated right here. Pay attention to the listed routine maintenance in its owner's manual and you should be fine. When something isn't right taking care of it sooner is best.

Mention the way it runs when you ask for service because a routine "tune-up" may not fix your specific problem. Be up front and ask for estimated costs - may take some $$ to diagnose.

Good luck,

T

Your vehicle does have the coil on plug ignition. You said it had a V6, there is not one listed for that model. It has an inline 6 cylinder and a V8. Maybe just a typo?? The parts are faorly simple to replace yourself if either are mechanically inclined. Click over there>>>>Here is some reading material and instructions for the plugs. And here is >>>>>information on the fuel filter. The air filter is straight forward and easily replaced. Good luck and let us know
