2000 Grand Am idling high

2000 Grand Am idling high Sign In

The car idles at 1500 and sometimes more. If I unhook "throttle position sensor" it idles around 800 like it should be will not drive once in gear, spit and sputtering. Going through alot more gas too.

And the other problem is antifreeze(water now) goes dow but no visible leaks.

Any ideas would be apprecitated. Thank you

Before you started unplugging things, was your check engine light coming on at all?

yes, but when hooked up t scanner nothing comes up.

but on grand am the "check engine light" is for emission stuff and "check vehicle light" is for other.
The coolant light is also on.

If the check engine light is coming on, then there will be codes stored if the computer is operational. You may have had a problem with the scan tool or the PCM in the car.

Guest; You need to address the coolant loss, first. The CTS (coolant temp sensor) must be immersed in coolant to get an accurate reading. If the PCM is not getting the correct information from the CTS, it will 'assume' the engine is cold, and increase idle speed. Will cause it to run rich, also.

He didn't say check the CTS, he said address the coolant loss.
Find out where the coolant is going but you still need to determine the computer issue also if you have a check engine light coming on.

OK, it seems like there is alot of white exhaust coming out which would mean its burning the water I guiess you could say, what would cause that? I know these engines are bad for head gaskets, how to tell if its that? Wouldn't there be water in with the oil right....but there isn't...

Sounds like you've hit the nail right on the head. No, water can leak into an exhaust port, go right out the exhaust and never touch the crankcase. I think you misunderstood about the CTS. The sensor is mounted in the cooling system to tell the computer the engine temperature. The computer then takes that temperature and adjusts fuel delivery accordingly. Since fuel injected cars have no 'choke', the computer will demand a rich mixture when the engine is cold.
(fast idle speed). As the engine warms, the computer sees this and begins leaning the mixture and the idle lowers.
Now....if the coolant level is low, the CTS can't give the computer the correct engine temp because it isn't in contact with any coolant. Soooooooo. Find and repair the coolant loss. Yes, very well could be the head gasket. You can have that checked very easily. Any shop that does emission repairs will have an exhaust analyzer. They can use this equipment to 'sniff' the radiator for exhaust gasses. If any are present, you've got an exhaust leak into the combustion chamber. (head gasket or a crack, which is possible if it got hot enough)

We still need to know what engine we have here.

Although diagnosis of a bad head gasket is the norm when coolant is being burned, if you happen to have a V6, there is a very common known problem with intake gaskets that can do the same thing and this is much less serious than a head gasket problem..

There is a light brown frothy type oil on the cap when I took it off, didn't notice before, cleaned it up and nothing yet but hasn't been driven much yet...

That engine is one that has intake gasket problems very often. It can leak into the combustion chamber or the crankcase so unless there is a history of a severe overhheating, the intake gasket is more likely than the head gasket.

So, best bet it is to buy a gaskets kit that comes with all and just do it all to be sure? How long should it take and how much usually? I am mechanically inclined so we be doing myself, can't afford over 1000 for someone else to do it.

No, that's not the best bet. There is a giant jump from a 4 to 5 hour intake gasket to 10 hours of removing 2 heads and all the machine shop costs that go with it. You will need to remove the intake and inspect the gasket looking for a place where it has broken so handle it carefully and if you won't recognize this, have someone there when you lift the manifold off that will recognize a problem with the gasket.

ok, so I checked to see if can see any leaks from intake or heads and I can see a tiny leak on left side of intake but there is also water building up below that around the head gasket, I don't think its the same water cause the intake one is barely wet kinda leak but below sitting on the block, I can see the dirt getting wet watching it...
