2000 Ford Focus turns over but won't start Sign In

Hi.

I have a 2000 Ford Focus (4 cylinder, automatic trans, 200,000 miles)

A week ago I started the car, backed out of the driveway, put it in drive, and it just quit. Then it would only turn over and not start. I checked the fuel system and it wasn't that and then I checked the sparkplugs and found that there was no spark when I turned the key. I replaced the wire connector that plugs into the coil because there was a wire pulled out. This seemed to work because the car started and I was able to drive it around the block. I tried starting it the next day and it turned over, but wouldn't start. I replaced the coil next and the same exact thing happened. I started the car right after replacing the coil. However, I just went out there to start it and it just turned over but wouldn't start. I would appreciate any help on this issue. Thanks

Well the 1st thing I would want to know is "why did that connecter come loose?"

Those have a lock on them & usually don't come off by themselves. You may want to check your motor mounts to make sure one isn't broken causing excessive movement. Next would be to inspect the connecter and make sure it didn't get damaged, loose pins, doesn't fit tight, broken lock, etc. Look around and make sure nothing else got jarred loose.

After that you'll have to treat it like a basic no start & start from scratch. 1st you'll only be able to check while the faillure is happening. Then you just have to trace down the circuits to see where you are losing your power or signals at.

It might not be a bad idea to have the codes pulled to see if there is any help there and like always have the battery tested to make sure its good....

(damn, why can't we just get an easy one, no maintenance ever done, runs rough all the time with a P0303?.....Sly Tongue)

The middle wire pulled out of the connector. The plastic connector was good and snug into the coil. I bought a new connector from the ford dealer and spliced the original wires with the wires on the new connector. The new wires are a thicker guage then the old ones so I questioned whether this would cause problems. I was told that it didn't matter because the power goes from the small wires into the thicker wires.

As far as why the wire pulled out, it just seemed to corrode through and became weak. I had an oil leak in the engine at one time and I think that it took its toll on the wire.

Thank you for the response.

Oil leaks can cause some deterioration but it would've had to been pretty bad for the wire to just fall out. Even with no weather packing there still is the pin tension to hold it...

The thicker gauge wire for a coil pack connecter isn't as critical as gauge or length is for a sensor circuit. Those circuits are way more sensitive to resistance changes.
Just make sure the connections are clean and secure. Also you may want to see if any codes have popped up...
