2000 F150 4.6 V8 - Low Oil Pressure! Sign In

Hello All,

I have a 2000 Ford F150 p/u, which I've owned for about 2 years now. It has the 4.6L V8. It runs very well and I've never had any significant problems with it. Maintained regularly.

However, in the last 2 weeks, my oil pressure shows low (on the dummy gauge anyway). I switched to synthetic oil about a year ago. I'm using Mobil 1, 5W-30. The pressure reads low when I start the engine and will remain low for a few minutes, but then comes up to "normal" pressure immediately. Sometimes the pressure will show low when I stop at a light too, but it recovers when I begin driving again. The needle on the guage either shows "no pressure" or "normal pressure". There's no in-between. I don't trust the gauge.

Anyone have any ideas how I might approach this problem? I'm inclined to think it's a dirty or fouled sensor somewhere, but I'm not familiar enough with the particulars to know where to start. Need advice!

THANKS - Mason

You need to install a mechanical gauge and see what the actual pressure is. If the pressure is good with mechanical gauge, try replacing the sending unit. It should be located on the oil filter housing.
