We have a 2000 Chevy venture warner bro edition van with 129000K miles - I think it is a V6. For the past year, it has had this problem randomly - but now it is almost constant.

When you are driving and your foot is on the gas peddle, randomly it feels like it is going to stall - - when this happens, the van lunges. It feels like a hiccup. This happens at any speed – during a left turn, if you gun it - or even on cruise at 70 MPH. When it gets really bad, the idiot lights even come on momentarily - almost like it stalls, but then the problem resolves. Sometimes the "Service Engine soon" light is on, sometimes it is not.

This is beginning to happen about 80% of the time while driving. It is NOT drive shaft regulators or the computer that regulates those. It is NOT the fuel injectors or mixed up spark plug wiring, etc.

We have spent nearly $1000 trying to get this fixed. It has been in the shop for 3 weeks at a time - with no luck. We appreciate any thoughts!

What are the code numbers being set when the check engine light comes on?

What have you done to the car already?

Fuel Injectors have been cleaned - spark plugs checked/replaced - fuel regulators replaced - crank shaft regulators replaced - the computer that controls those, replaced. I do not know the exact code numbers - and currently the problem is there, with no Service Engine light on. Most of the time, the problem is there without that light on. 3 weeks ago - the light finally came on and we were told that the crank shaft regulators were bad. Those were replaced with new ones - and the computer still said that they were bad. So they replaced the computer, and ensured all the wiring was intact. We picked up the van - and within 10 minutes the problem returned.

The first thing you need to do is find a different shop because this one is just throwing parts at it without confirming anything.

If you are truly experiencing a misfire, the computer should be seeing that and be able to identify which cylinder is doing it. You don't mention changing any coils or plug wires and they are the most common cause of a constant misfire like you describe on that engine.

Cam sensor has been replaced - a module - and there are NO fuel pump codes - although the fuel pump was replaced at like 70K miles when it went out. The problem did not start till about 100K miles.

could it be a transmission problem?

All of the plug wires have been checked - and the computer does not show any codes for the misfire.

And just how were they checked?

My understanding is that each wire was visually traced and ensured for a proper connection - a couple of them were "frayed" and replaced. The car was connected to some new computer that diagnosis the codes. The only codes it showed were for the crank shaft regulators. For the past year we have been dealing with this, it is the first time that any computer showed codes. (We have had it checked in Chicago and Detroit). Never has a "misfire" shown - that is why this has been so complicated. I keep expressing it as a misfire - and when it bucks, that is what it feels like. However, now the thought is perhaps it is a trans issue. The trans is original and never been worked on. The problem does happen at mph's when the trans is shifting (25, 35, 45) but then also when it is cruising at 70.

First you can't know anything about the condition of the plug wire with a visual inspection.
As far as the transmission causing this, if it's happening at the same speed all the time and this speed is over 50MPH, it could be a torque converter engagement problem. Take it out of overdrive to test that.

It happens at random speeds - usually 25, 45, and 60 or over - but it can happen anytime. There is no apparent reason for this - it just bucks, or hiccups, for about a nanosecond and then you are back to everything being just fine. Sounds dumb- but under 50 it usually happens on a left turn or if you really gun it. The whole van lunges when it happens. Once a few months ago - PepBoys found a fuel code of some sort. We replaced the gas cap - and that code has never returned.

There are numerous possibilities and there won't be any magic answer found on the internet. Someone is going to have to do some serious troubleshooting during the failure to isolate where the source of the problem is.

It could be in the wiring, the plugs wires, the coils and numerous other possibilities.

I was afraid you were going to say something like that. It has been to a place that just deals with electrical - and still nothing. Everyone thinks they found the problem - and several $$$ later - the problem returns. Trying to code during the failure is so hard because the failures only last 1/2 second and they happen so randomly. I do appreciate your wisdom, however, and will inquire once again about the coils. I know the plugs have been checked in IL and MI, and the wiring has been checked numerous times, but I don't know about the coils. I am tempted to sell it and start over, but who wants to buy a van that bucks and you can't even make a left turn out of the sub division! If you have any other thoughts - please pass them on.

I totally understand your problem with intermittent failures. These are the type of things we face all the time and the bottom line is that if you cannot confirm the failure, you cannot know if you have found anything. Simply throwing parts at it can be very expensive. Everybody can say they checked so and so but the fact is, it's not possible to rule any of these parts out. Wire breaks and failures can be buried deep inside harnesses and without duplicating the problem you cannot condemn or eliminate any of them.

Our mechanic in IL suggested a vacuum leak in the EGR Valve as a possibility. Any thoughts?

NO, that wouldn't be your problem
That engine doesn't even have a vacuum operated EGR.

Another suggestion that has not been looked into is the Mass Air Flow Sensor. Thoughts?

Might try sweeping the TPS and watch for any 'glitches'? Just a thought.

I have the same van, same problem, first did a complete tuneup, worked beautiful for 3 weeks then "bucking" returned, my mechanic is at a loss because the three codes that show up on diagnostic have nothing to do with the van bucking or misfiring. He suggested not putting any more money into it as this appears to be a very common problem with this van and the only way to fix it is to perform hit or miss fixes and possibly sink more money into it then what it is worth.

Loren, my 96 Lumina APV van w/3.4 v6 gave me the same headache. Buck, then fine. Finally quits, tow it home, drive it off the trailor, runs fine. Twice it happened and twice I replaced the plug wires. Bought lifetime warranty wires and have replaced them again due to the same prob. I took the cover off the intake that shrouds the plug wires and hung it on the wall. Haven't had a prob since, 1 1/2 years ago. 210.103 miles. Maybe this helps, hope so. Bill

I have been asked to look at my Pastors van which is experiencing this same issue. Only, his is actually dying all the time. It restarts but dies again not too long again. Died 3 times in about 6 blocks. A lot of chatter about the EGR valve but its an expensive part to just throw at it. I have also heard ox sensor could cause this?

Pablo; Which engine does this have? Fuel pressure issues with GM Vortec engines are very common. The EGR valve would have to be sticking open to cause the dying. The O2 sensor would have to be commanding full rich or full lean to cause dying, and only then if the engine is at operating temp. as it doesn't come into 'play' until then. If you can get me the engine size, I can get you fuel pressure specs. Check engine light on? Any trouble codes stored?

I had that problem on my wifes van. Replaced the fuel filter and the problem went away. Not saying thats your problem but that was happening to me surging while driving. Flet like the transmission was slipping poured seafoam into tank problem went away for a month then came back. Checked wires to trans, check the fluid changed plugs and wires, nothing. Changed the fuel filter and is stopped. I think it has something to do with the fuel injectors getting clogged up and not spraying correctly. Start with the inexpensive first.
