2000 Chevy Tracker 2.0 AC compressor only kicks on in defrost mode

I took the truck to Chevy to fix the horn, they couldn't fix it and now the AC only works in defrost mode. I would take it back, but never want to see the chevy place again.

If the compressor only engages in defrost mode then that would most likely be a bad control head. I'm afraid you'll need the dealer for at least the parts because no one else will sell it.

How would they break that trying to fix the horn? The AC worked perfectly fine when it went in to the dealer, it comes out and does not work. Is there anything that they could have left unhooked?

I would be real surprised if it was caused by them in any way.

I would be very surprised if there wasn't a common denominator. The AC worked when the truck went in and did not work when it came out. They tried to say the horn switch was no good and it is part of the air bag and the air bag was $1200. I checked it when I got home and the switch worked fine, there was a broken wire in the clock spring. I just really don't trust this dealership right now...

Back to orig post the dealer didn't even fix the horn and now later a clock spring was found the be the issue is that right?
OK: TMK they (dealer you didn't like) may have gone crazy looking for horn itself and testing or jumping wires. The steering column shouldn't contain a thing to do with A/C - period. If certain items underhood were disconnected or jumped it could be an issue but I think it unlikely so far. Can you see anything unplugged?

I can see nothing unplugged, but there are some relays by the junction box under the hood. One of them has the rubber boot cut half off, and it wasn't before. I just don't think anything is wrong with the ac unit if the compressor comes on when i switch the vent to use the defrost port (but I could be wrong, my specialty is robotics, not automotive). As soon as I switch to the defroster vents, the compressor kicks on and the air is cold.

I can't be certain but as Hammer Time suggested back a few posts the control head probably has the issue. This is going to take some testing electrically as I think the same relays and fuses are used if this works at all which it does.
You don't want to know this but all vehicles sold to USA employ a high pressure cut out switch from new. If jumped the wrong way it can blow a body control module. I sense and can sympathize with you and the frustration but this is going to take some real hands on help to diagnose IMO. There's apparently no power making it to compressor in normal modes of requesting A/C which does lead to the control head but could be more than just that! Arggh!

The control head is the component that makes the compressor on request. If it works on defrost, then the rest of the circuit is OK, It's just not getting the request to come on from the control head.
I don't believe they had anything to do with it.
