2000 Chevy Malibu will not turn to lock position
|

About a year ago my wife noticed that when she would take out her key from the ignition switch, she could not turn the switch all the way to the lock position. She felt it may have been do to not putting the gear shift into park correctly or turning the key off to fast. Altering the way the car was shut off didnt seem to make a difference. The switch could be turned all the way to lock after some jiggling but now it just will not turn all the way. As a result the clock light and another instrument are left with the light on. Is there a simple fix to getting the tumblers to work with the key or do I need a new ignition switch. Thank You. Yuri Iwaniuk 200 Chevy Malibu 6 cyl 165000 mi

The ignition lock and switch assembly can be taken apart and service separately. After the assembly is removed from the dash; turn the key to the on position and then depress a release tag on the lock and it wil pull out of the switch. A lock smith may be able to repair the lock but it’s not likely worth the effort. Dan. Canadian "EH"

I agree with Dan, repairing the lock isn't worth the effort or money..... Make sure you key isn't worn out and you can try spraying a couple shots of PB penetrating oil in the cylinder, this make free up the tumblers........

Hey, I had this very same problem. It wasn't ignition switch! It was in fact the transmission selector. The mechanism in the auto transmission gear selector keeps sticking. Pull out on the black buttons and wiggle the handle. I had to replace the handle to get it to work correctly again.

I had murder trying to get rid of this problem, then I came across this site and read your comment. I went outside to the car and fiddled with the transmission lever and presto, the key went to its home position. Shame was, that I purchased another ignition barrel from ebay weeks ago and the same problem occurred. I would like to confirm to all, that the transmission lever is at fault as you say.
