2000 Chevy C/K 2500 5speed 4x4 5.7L We took our truck in for a tune up. They replaced the fuel filter, wires & plugs, rotor, and cap. When we picked it up it now idles rough, has a strong smell of gasoline, and just doesn't run right. We usually start out in 2nd gear from a stop and that isn't as easy as it used to be. When it sat overnight, we had trouble keeping it running, had to start it about 5 times. Any ideas? We took it back to the mechanic and he doesn't know what is wrong. Thank you for your help, we are planning on using this truck to pull a trailer about 2000 miles and need it working properly.

How was the engine running before the tune-up? Is the check engine light on? What is the fuel pressure when it doesn't want to start? Are you smelling raw fuel? If it was running good before it went in for a tune up, might want to inspect the fuel filter and make sure that all the plug wires are installed correctly. Go back over everything that was installed. Make sure the new fuel filter isn't plugged up for some odd reason. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

It was running good before we took it in. I don't know what the fuel pressure was. It was just the morning after that I had trouble starting it. I'll have him look at the fuel filter again and check the plugs and wires again. It just smelled like gas to me.

speed: Not DS here but I think fuel filter can be backwards and new should still work but never tested that. What is a huge issue with the ones on frame rail is the lines rust into the flare nuts if that type on this one and any drop of fuel leaking will make an odor wherever it is from. Odd? I think the 5.7 engine was for export only for a while starting with model year 2000? Not a problem but now I don't have a clue if it was an export made truck as to what differences there might be, T

Ty tom i was just wondering because its a sinple mistake that can be made in a hurry and we are only human after all, thought maybe it was a possibility and that it was the reason it was running so bad GM ASEP 26 SCC Milford ASE certified in Brakes and Electrical on Thursday April 5th 2012

How about somebody puts a fuel pressure gauge on it before we go off on a trip with fuel filters. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

My thought on the fuel filter is it MIGHT be the source of the fuel odor even if it seemed right at installation. It not running properly is a separate issue IMO, Tom

Had one occurrence of a newly installed fuel filter that was plugged up because someone at the factory got carried away with the glue machine and covered the entire filter media in glue. As HT stated, getting a fuel pressure measurement would be a good idea. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
