1999 pontiac grand am shakes and dies out. Sign In

1999 PONTIAC/GRAND AM. ENGINE SIZE 2.4L MILEAGE 131494 THE CAR JUST STARTED TO SHAKE WHEN I CAME TO A STOP OR RED LIGHT. I PUT IT IN NEUTRAL TO KEEP IT FROM DYING OUT. ONCE I STARTED TO MOVE IT WAS OK BUT STILL SHOOK. I HAD A MECHANIC CHECK IT AND HE SAID MY IDLE CONTROL VALVE WAS PROBABLY DIRTY AND HE WOULD CLEAN IT. I PAID HIM 250$ TO CLEAN THE VALVE, PUT NEW SPARK PLUGS AND AN AIR FILTER. HE SAID I MIGHT HAVE TO BUY A NEW IDLE CONTROL VALVE IF WHAT HE DID DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM. THAT WAS 1/15/14. TODAY IS 1/22/14. I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND I TURNED ON THE A/C. IT IMMEDIATELY STARTED TO SHAKE AND ALMOST DIE OUT WHEN I CAME TO A STOP. I CALLED THE MECHANIC AND HE TOLD ME I NEEDED A NEW VALVE. I INFORMED HIM THAT WHEN I TURNED ON THE A/C IS WHEN IT STARTED TO SHAKE. HE SAID THATS BECAUSE USING MY A/C PUTS A STRAIN ON THE CAR. MY A/C HAS NEVER CAUSED MY CAR TO DO THIS. PLEASE HELP. WHAT SHOULD I DO? DOES THE IDLE CONTROL VALVE HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE A/C?

Anything that puts a load on the engine will effect the idle speed and the IAC is responsible for correcting that.

is yoour check engine light on- did the mechanic mention any codes? important info is available here.

I want to be clear- the vehicle shakes in park? or only when in drive when braking and at a stop? shifting to Park smoothes it out?

Answers will help with suggestions

THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATION. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE IDLE CONTROL VALVE AND THE IAC? I HAVE USED MY A/C FOR YEARS AND HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE IDLE.

What's the point in that statement? Everything works good until it doesn't any more.

The idle control and IAC (idle air control) are the same thing.

NO, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS NOT ON. NO HE DIDNT MENTION ANY CODES. HE CAME TO MY HOME TO DO THE REPAIRS. WHEN I START THE CAR WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE IT VIBRATES IN ALL GEARS. THE ONLY TIME THE SHAKING AND VIBRATING GOES AWAY IS WHEN I AM DRIVING THE CAR. SO IT SEEMS LIKE WHENEVER MY FOOT IS ON THE BRAKE, OR WHEN BRAKING COMING TO A STOP. NO IT DOESN'T SMOOTH OUT SHIFTING TO PARK BECAUSE MY FOOT IS ON THE BRAKE. I AM SO SORRY THAT I CANT EXPLAINE IT ANY BETTER, HOWEVER THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP.

turn off the caps lock.

the CEL (check engine light) will not always be on when there are codes...
a free scan is available at auto parts stores - autozone advance Orielys - its FREE post any code no#s the mention..

the scanning for codes is BASIC a first step very important - the scanning is also the avenue to communicate with the vehicle computer the person doing the work should have done this - lets start with the FREE scan mentioned

You've been asked twice to shut off the cap locks

Millie, the reason he said that your statement about having used the AC before was iseless is because it is. Obviously your car has acted right before. That was when there is nothing wrong with it. When I bought new tires for my car they held air. Then I ran over a nail and got a flat. So it would be useless for me to tell you that my tire always held air before so I see no reason why it won't now. What I should be doing is finding the nail and fixing it, right? Thats the point he is making.

You touched on the car shaking even in park when you have the brake on. Is the AC on when this is happening? Try it without AC, does it idle correctly? Does it act up when you hold the brake and then get better when you let off of the brake? That would be information we need to be able to help you. We are professional techs here. We are not getting paid to be here and you pay nothing for us to help you. We are freely giving you the knowledge we use to put food on our tables, and it has taken many years and many thousands of dollars from us to learn it. We do not like to give poor information, nor do we throw parts at a car on a guess. So we need you do do the tests we ask in order to help us help you. We want your car back on the road and fixed right the first time. Thats why you came in the first place, right?

Kev had a good point about getting codes scanned. As he mentioned, most major parts stores will do this for free. Be sure to get the exact code numbers (a letter and 4 digits, for example P0300) and not some generic description. With any driveability issue codes are one of the first things to check as it may yield a clue as to what direction to take. It isn't a magic box that tells you what is wrong with a car, but does give information that can be interpreted by someone who has a good enough knowledge of how the system functions.

And thank you for turning off the caps lock.
