1999 escort. Problem solved!

I have 1999 Ford Escort SE wagon
it was running fine. i got out to check something on top and the car cut off. when i try to crank it the engine turns over, but never cranks. I checked the plugs, fuel pressure, injector pulse, and compression. At first everything but the fuel checked out. The pressure came up to 38psI, and dropped quick. The min. to start the car is 50 psi to start it. I replaced the fuel filter. Pressure came up to around 43, but it held with the key off. Car still wouldn't start. Next i took out the fuel pump and checked it on an ohmmeter. It came up with zero ohms.(i think the meter was faulty) I bought a new pump to go into sending unit. While i was waiting for the part to come in I hooked 12 volts to the original pump out of the sending unit, and also checked the pressure directly from it. Still right around 43psi. Put the new pump in the car. Still got the same psi and no start. Checked the timing belt and it is in good shape. I lifted the injectors out of the motor. I have no idea how much they are suppose to spray, but it didn't look like they were spraying quite enough. They were spraying some fuel though. How do i make sure they are working properly? if that doesn't work then what?

Your spec - if it needs 50 psi to start and won't then it would with starting fluid. You've made no mention if this has spark or did I miss that?

All four spark plugs look and fire well. I sprayed gas with a spray bottle where the injectors should, didn't crank. i may have sprayed to much. Most the time it turns over without any combustion. Occasionally there is a little combustion but not enough to start it.

If everything you said were true, your car would be running. You were given a series of tests at another site but you didn't follow them. Your doing some of them and making your own conclusions. That isn't going to work if you expect anyone to help you.
Is your car a DOHC or SOHC?

If you look back on the other site i have replied and done all the test. I'm not sure if it's sohc or dohc. the motor is an split port injection 2000. i bought haynes book and thats how i've gotten to where i'm at now.

What is the 8th digit of the VIN#?
Do you actually have a noid light?
Do you have a spark tester to use at the end of the plug wire?
Was 43PSI the maximum output using an external 12v power supply and ground when bench testing the pump?

The 8th digit is a P. Yes i bought a set of noid lights. They blink when the engine is trying to turn over. no spark tester, but held all plugs one by one to motor and they all sparked really well. 43 was the maximum at 12v and 15v.

That's a SOHC
You don't have enough fuel pressure but I don't understand why it didn't fire when you primed the intake. Try that again using a spray can of starting fluid or carb cleaner.
This is a variable pressure system controlled by a driver module. It should be capable of 60 PSI or more when given full 12 volt and ground.

I have some carb cleaner i will try. Don't have internet were my car is at, so can't try now. if carb cleaner works does that point to injectors? Would any sensor cause this, and can i check them somehow?

As HT said - use starting fluid not raw gas as you might have just soaked the plugs. Rare but they can get soaked and not fire and won't air dry even when the look dry. Takes new ones or heat or they can ground out without making the spark it needs.
Never mind fuel pressure or injectors. It should at least give a respectable buck or phart with starting fluid IF plugs are ok and things are on time.
Note: A spark plug will fire if taken out and grounded to see it but may not under compression! Original problems may have hurt them such that unseen the spark goes from center electrode right thru the porcelain without making an effective spark. Seen that at least three times when everything else was right.
If that's what's happening you need leave them out for a day so cylinders can dry out too. Again - this is when everything else is known right and it won't fire up.
More - Ford's like OE Autolites. If you have some tricky other plugs in there could be the whole problem - rare as said but happens,

No, you said you already verified injector pulse. We're looking at fuel pressure problems, not necessarily the pump, if it starts on carb cleaner.
Remember, it won't run without the intake snorkel being attached.

Ditto: What are compression readings? Cylinder walls can wash out with fuel and you'd probably smell it in the oil......

About 5 consecutive teeth were stripped on the very bottom. It was tight when I checked it, and I didn't go through the work to be able to get the cover completely off, and at that point the fuel pressure wasn't high enough nor was it holding so I was sure the problem was there. sorry for my ignorance. Thanks for your help.
Fuel pressure is still low. I only replaced the pump inside the sending unit. Does the sending unit have anything that would fault? Or is it more likely i have a faulty gauge?

You aren't listening! If the thing had no fuel at all it should still react to starting fluid. I don't use carb cleaner as some of it will about choke out an engine as to not be too flammable - at least here anyway.
You said it died all at once which strongly suggests a timing (valve timing included) issue or spark problem,

OK, so what your saying is that the timing belt jumped. Now that means when we asked you about the compression reading, they were not OK.
Now you see why I get pissed off when people don't want to follow instructions or lie to me about doing it when they didn't. You just wasted a whole bunch of time on 2 different web sites because you didn't follow the instructions you were given on the very first response to you. This problem would have been found then.

This is the exact reason why I usually don't accept..... "good" or "A-ok" as a test result...........
I see a lot of time AND money being wasted here..... This is really a shame, for all parties involved.....
This one reminds me of that no crank Cav HT.... The guy wouldn't answer my question about the alarm after being asked multiple times. He went on to replace hundreds of dollars of comp sensors only to find out it had a bad ign sw (which would've been the next thing to be checked once he verified there was no alarm  )....
