1999 VW Beetle Sign In

My car is a GREAT little car but it has the weirdest problem and I'm hoping someone can help me because it seems to be getting worse...

It never has ANY problems, EXCEPT when you fill up with gas. It doesn't matter if you don't fill it up all the way or not, it doesn't matter how empty the tank is, anytime you put gas in this car and go to start it, it gives a hell of a time starting. I can't tell if it's more like the engine is flooded or the engine is not getting the gas it needs, but either way you have to pump the gas pedal for a good 10-15 seconds for it to start, and then when it starts up, you have to sit there at the gas pump and rev the engine for about 1-2 minutes, then it idles perfectly normally, and will not give you a single problem until you go to fill up the next time.

PLEASE help because it's getting worse and I'm afraid that I'm doing something bad to the engine!

Guess: Running low on fuel will ruin fuel pumps. Problems could be internment or a complete no go situation,

rhff; If 'pumping' the pedal actually helps, then I would lean towards thinking it was overfueling. On fuel injected vehicles, when you press on the throttle, you are actually giving it more air, not fuel. The next time it does this, try holding the throttle to the floor. Don't pump it. If it is flooded, it will start running, maybe even a bit rough. Back off the throttle as the rpm comes up so that you don't over-rev the engine. Do you have a check engine or service engine soon lamp illuminated?

Sounds like a stuck open purge valve. When you fill up with gas the valve should be closed. Only should be open
at certain time controlled by ECM. It is allowing vapors from fuel tank to be forced into intake. When you pump the gas
you are actually allowing air to clear out intake. Can try pinching off lines to purge valve and see if problem goes away
May need a qualified tech to help you find it in the vehicle. Pinching off may cause Check engine light, (I assume its already
on), pinching off doesn't hurt anything but can help diagnose then can be replaced.
