1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP 3.6L Supercharged 250,000 miles Car starts fine and idles but will chug and sometimes dies when up to speed. Ran the diagnostic tool and it pulled up no trouble codes. Replaced the fuel pump and filter and this did not help. If I keep on the gas it keeps it from dying but then will die when I slow down or stop. If I wait a few minutes it will start right back up but will have the same issues when I get up to speed. Any idea where my issue could be?

defton; I'm assuming since there are no DTCs that you also don't have a CEL or SES lamp illuminated? Since you can keep it running by feathering the throttle, that would eliminate ignition problems. One that comes to mind would be excessive back pressure (plugged catalyst), but generally won't affect it at idle speeds. Could be more than one thing going on, here. Catalytic converters can break up, internally. You may want to take a rubber mallet, or your fist, and smack the cat to hear if there is anything loose inside. Sometimes, a chunk can break off, plug the exhaust end, and cause a severe loss of power. You'll stop, the chunk will fall away, and be good to go again. Fairly rare, but possible. Even though you've already replaced the fuel pump, pressure readings would be helpful. You did replace the filter, right? This engine probably uses a digital type EGR valve, but can stick open causing the symptoms of a massive vacuum leak. Unlikely, but again possible. Loren SW Washington

Not sure which pressure readings you need as I am not completely sure what I am looking at on the diagnostic tool. I did get these readings though, don't know if they help or not. Tank Pressure (V) 1.47 Tank Pressure (mmHg) -1.60 Evap Purge 15% Evap Vent Sol Off If you need any other readings let me know which ones would help. I also found that if I rev it up in idle it starts to chug around 3000 rpm and above and then dies afterwards. Sometimes instead of dying right away it will drop and rise in rpm quickly and then eventually die.

defton; Actually, I was looking for fuel pressures. Loren SW Washington

Like I said I'm unsure what I'm looking at in the diagnostic tool. I'm using a the Snap-On Solus so if you have any experience with that, letting me know what I need to get would definitely help. Thanks.

Common on these models is the failure of the fuel pump resistor. Worth looking into...Just a thought! Click here.... Click Here....

Jim; That's news to me! Thanks. Of course, if we run into it, I'll have forgotten. <sigh> Great post! Loren SW Washington

im reading the fuel pump resistor, and im wondering if that is my ptoblem too. i have a 99 gtp. it doesnt stall out yet, but it will lose power, breaking up and then kick back on. my rpm's r going from 3000 to 0 and right back up. ive already tried new plugs wires, even changed the module. just sinking money in it and no mechanic can figure it out. does this sound like the same problem? i have a race in 2 weeks so i have to get it back on the road. thx
