1999 Mercury Sable Starting Issue
|
|

I have a 1999 Mercury Sable with a pretty new battery (1 year and 5 months), but just today, I go to start it, which it did at first, but I noticed that it was slow to do so, almost like having a low battery. Just to make sure, I shut it off, go to start it again a couple of more times, and was doing the same thing (kind of slow to start). On about fourth try, it wouldn't even give a click or any sign of starting. So currently, you turn the key and there is nothing; no turning of the engine, clicking, or anything. Just nothing happens at all. However, all the dash lights and everything else that requires battery, come on fine though. To troubleshoot to see if it was the battery or not, I hooked up my 12-volt battery charger to it, and it was just about completely charged right from the start. About two minutes later, the charger automatically stopped charging because it was fully charged. So we can conclude that it is absolutely not the battery. The only next issue I can think of is that it's the starter, or the solenoid on the starter. Would appreciate any helpful input on what your take would be on the possible issue. Thank you. ~FGN

Thanks for your input, but how can you conclude that my battery is junk if it hasn't been tested yet like you suggested?

It may satisfy voltage up to where charger thinks it's fine and would be but not AMP power to turn an engine. You would see that with a plain but fast voltmeter watch it drop off while cranking must falling like rock when it should stay up while under load but doesn't. Think? Charger doesn't know if it charging a toy car battery or one to crank a real engine takes real AMPs that hold. Again without a big deal you could just watch it drop with a voltmeter without jumping thru lots of hoops declare that battery is no longer up to par anymore most likely, T

With my vehicle, there's just absolutely nothing when you turn the key.
