I have a 1999 Ford Escort that has been "hiccuping" for the last several months. It now has about 90,000 miles on it and, I will admit, I haven't taken the best care of it.

A few months back, it started making this weird clicking noise that sounded like it was coming from the passenger side. Soon after, it started doing what I can best describe as "hiccuping", where I am driving down the road and the car sort of jumps. It doesn't happen all the time and it usually lasts for no more than 5-10 seconds but I have no idea what the problem could be (I know next to nothing about cars). I have been told several different things by several different mechanics just based on me telling them this so now I am even more confused then before.

I am going to be taking a 1,000 round trip road trip at the end of May and I am concerned my car might now make it which is why I am trying to figure out what is wrong. I refuse to put a lot of money into it because it is worth nothing and is paid off. The only place I usually drive it is to and from work, about a 13 mile trip, one way, with stop and go traffic.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

tarheels; A teaspoon full of sugar usually works. Or, try drinking a glass of water upside down. Oh, you were talking about your car?Wink That's a tough one. Do you have a check engine light coming on? Does the check engine light come on when you first turn the key to the 'on' position? Assuming the CEL is working, it could be as simple as some water in the fuel...a plug or a plug wire intermittently shorting to ground and the computer isn't picking it up as it's happening too quickly. The clicking noise could be most anything, without being able to hear it. Sometimes, an exhaust leak will be described as a 'clicking noise' by a customer. Just had one, today. But, that wouldn't cause a 'hiccup' unless the exhaust leak was damaging a plug wire. If you are planning a trip, I'd recommend letting a mechanic that you trust check it out prior.
Now, keep in mind, that maintenance is worth it's weight in gold. A '99 with only 90K has, potenionally, a lot of life left... if you take care of it. Most cars can last in excess of 200K if they are taken care of.

Check & clean your battery connections, the negative in particular.

That year has a gang connection on the neg. I've seen a few with loose connections doing just what you described.

The clicking you hear sounds like a relay making & breaking connection due to the bad ground.....
