My 1999 Ford Escort Finesse 16v died on me whilst driving yesterday. Being an older car the acceleration is bad usually but yesterday driving to an appointment it was very very bad. Took about 5 minutes to get up to freeway speed... Made it to the appointment and about 5 miles toward home when the car just started making a high pitched whining sound and started chugging along very slowly. I got off the freeway and just started losing power , the revs were very high but got no response. After acting like this for about 5 minutes, trying to find a safe place to pull over it finally stalled out and just died. Shortly after I lost my battery power as well. I've had a tow home and have no idea what to do with it now.

Can anyone please help ?? Thanks

Seems at a glance here your charging system gave out on you - first would lose power then everything if it did.

Test and charge up battery - check connections and belt + belt tension too that it's tight enough. Maybe that's all or it may need an alternator - too soon right now. When you get it running check for volt output or have the system tested.

It being 10 years old doesn't really mean it should have less power than when newer so something is/was wrong with that??
