DrElectrics, This is the answer to your question "Does my 1998 Ford Explorer click, crank or silent". The Explorer cranks. If you can help me I would me most greatful. My car has been like this for a year just parked in my driveway. I have to get it fix, I can't wait on my husband because he does not know what is wrong with it. He put the fuel pump and filter on and he thought that would work, but it did not.

Hmmm, Good good. Cranks but won't start. I think this is one for all of us. Mechanics (DanD, W2O & T.G.) & Elec Techs. Next thing to check that I have learn from the mechs is "SPARK AND FUEL"

If they are both good, check the battery. Dunno what a battery test costs over there, but its like $10 here in OZ. Ask one of the mechs on how to check "SPARK & FUEL" In a PM if they don't reply to this.

Can you hear the fuel pump run when you turn the key to the 'ON" position? It should run for about 2 or 3 seconds then shut off. If you can not hear any noise from the fuel pump, check fuses and relays. You could spray some carburetor cleaner in the throttle body to see if it will start. If so, no fuel is getting to the engine. There also is a fuel shut off switch that may be tripped. Owners manual will tell you where it is located. Ford might call it an inertia switch. If you dont have an owners manual, click here and download one free. If the pump works, you need to see how much fuel pressure you have. If fuel pressure is around 42 to 45 psi with key "ON", that is normal and we need to look elsewhere. Autozone has a loan a tool program and will instruct you as to how to use the tool. Lets do this first and go from there. Spark is going to be next. You can remove one of the wires and install a new spark plug in it and ground the plug to the engine somewhere and crank the engine. Look for spark at the bottom of the plug. If there is no spark, again, look at all the fused and relays. Then I would go to the crankshaft positioning sensor. This is what tells the computer when to allow a spark to occur. Good luck and let us know.
