I own a 1998 Olds Silhouette and it has 154,000 miles and runs great at slow and fast speeds. But, when at a stop and idling it runs rough. I should say that it It runs loud and has a very mild vibration. Hardly any vibration. The spark plugs are not due to be changed yet. What is surprising, Is that when you go outside the car and listen to the engine with hood up or down, it sounds fine. It is only when you are in the car and it is idling that it sounds abnormal/loud. Any thoughts?

That could be a tough one to diagnose online. Have you ever changed the plug wires? How about the fuel filter? Have you had the van scanned for codes?

I have a 2002 Chevy Venture which is similar to the Silhouette. I've done quite a bit of work to mine but have never had that issue.

There are some professional mechanics on here who donate their time to help us all out. They are top notch mechanics. If anyone can figure it out online they can. So, be sure to check back tonight and throughout the day tomorrow.

Is it possible for you to record the sound, or a video of the noise? You could upload it to a hosting site and post the link here. That would really help the mechanics have an idea of what the noise really sounds like.

Check engine light on? If so, what trouble codes are stored?

Couple possibilities are motor mount problems or grounded exhaust parts. If you have worn out or broken motor mounts, that can cause those symptoms. If the exhaust is contacting parts of the body, that cause vibrations and noises also.

no codes are appearing that I am aware of. just had it inspected and they scanned it and when I had an coolant hose repaired there were no codes that I amaware of that the mechanic found.

Did they inspect the engine mounts or other components such as exhaust and/or ac lines contacting the body?

I really haven't had the time to take it to my mechanic, but I was wondering. Could the symptoms I describe above indicate a catalytic converter that is partially clogges and whenn I speed up it becomesa none issue because more force is causing it not to hold up the airflow through it?

If your cat was clogged it wouldn't have enough power to get out of its own way. But if you run for too long with a misfire you will end up wrecking the cat and that will add to the repair bill substantially.

I know that this thread is very old, but I am having the same exact issue with my silhouette. Did you ever find out what was causing it?

Thread now locked. Start your own with your own specifics not hijack another you just think is identical and probably not making readers read whole thread because you are too lazy to explain your own and everyone get a notice of a reply made to a problem they weren't involved with anymore,
