1998 Honda Accord - Brakes Sign In

I am replacing my rear rotors. Neither of the 2 screws that hold the rotor on would come off without a screw extractor. So I used the Extractor and i broke the head off the screw. For fear of destroying the threads I have not removed the body of the screws yet. How important are these 2 screws? I have seen rotors that are not held on with these screws and are just kept stable by the tire with the Lug Nuts.

1. Is it okay to replace the rotors without replacing the screws?
2. Should I use a screw extractor to remove the body or is there some easier method that Im not aware of?

Thanks Ahead of Time!

Re: 1998 Honda Accord - Brakes Sign In

They do serve a purpose which is to have the rotor properly centered on the hub and so that it can't just tilt when a wheel is removed and replacing the wheel might just tighten up all crooked and not be safe. It's a shorter hub before it grabs than some old drum brakes had on the typical American car which used silly speed clips mostly to keep the drums and some rotors from falling off while assembling the car. That old type was pretty hard to tighten up a wheel without self centering the drum or rotor but yours is fussier.

I have to suggest you try to get the now just stud out and replace them. You may know how to get around using them but think of anyone else who might have the car and change a wheel and get messed up by that. Do the right thing and get them out,

They can probably be found in a hardware store but must be flush to the rotor when done.

Another time use an impact driver and they usually come out,
