1998 Grand Marquis' Rattles Loudly

My Grand Marquis GS was working fine until I went to start it in the driveway and heard an really loud noise like someone made a strike in bowling coming from the engine area. The car's odometer had been broken for over 3 years but it has about 145k on it. Also, anti-freeze and oil coming from top of engine. I'm a novice at this and a friend with some mechanical knowledge said it sounds like broken rods in the engine and that we have a head gasket leak. Strange that this happened so suddenly. Also, I have receipts to prove I had oil changed and other preventative maintenance done. Any ideas? Thanks.
