1998 Ford Explorer ABS light, whining sound Sign In

I have a 1998 Ford Explorer with 74,000 miles on it, while driving the abs light lit up on my dash and whenever I hit the gas pedal there is a high pitched whining sound, it stops instantly when I take my foot off the gas pedal but starts again when I have my foot on the pedal again.

Do you have to be moving to hear the whining sound? If not, I'd suspect a belt possibly slipping under accel.
The ABS lamp may be illuminated due to low brake fluid. On the other hand, you may want to get the brakes inspected. I can't see the correlation between the two symptoms, though.

You need to have the ABS codes read. Autozone probably will not read them. All they read is the engine codes. It is possible they may be related since the rear sensor is located on top of the rear end housing. If it is broken, it can possibly be hitting the sensor ring inside the rear end. Not real likely, but possible.

The brake fluid is fine, and I have to be moving to create the whining noise.

the low brake fluid usually trips the "brake" light like you were to leave your E-Brake on.

the Abs light creates a trouble code like way2old stated. chances are its a bad wheel sensor. if memory serves me right the sensors are rather pricey, so it would be in your interest to have to codes read to find out which exact sensor it is instead of throwing parts at it.

sometimes the wheel bearings as they wear can deposit metal shavings onto the magnetic pick up for the sensor and give a abs light. if thats your case you probably looking at replacing wheel bearings instead....
