1997 Town& Country Starts but then shuts off Sign In

Hi everyone, I'm new to the board and I have a 1997 Town & Country Lxi 2 wheel drive,3.8 liter engine,213000 miles. Wife got in the van the other day and it started but then shuts off. It has done this before when parked on incline being low on fuel, But this time I moved it and no start still. So i stared checking thing and also added some gas, But then I noticed that the gauges didn't work when the key is turned on. The fuel pump runs and I have fuel to the rails, I checked all the fuses none blown but i don't know about relays or what to check other wise, It was running fine other wise. I did get check engine light and it was down stream o2 and air bag light come on a while back but has been driving fine. any help would be great. Thanks.

lethal; You'll need to check for injector pulse and spark.

I want to ask this. If it starts and runs momentarily do I still need to check for spark for a longer period? And use a noid light for injector pules?

One or both of those things dropped out when the engine died. You need to monitor both of them as it dies to determine which dropped out.

I checked the spark and the fuel pressure and have both. I only loose those when the engine stops. I also check the wiring as best that I know. My wife told me today that it done this the other day while she was going down the road but then the gauges come back on and the doors looked. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

lethal; You have spark and fuel pressure with the engine cranking? You should have. If it has spark, fuel, and compression, it should run. Might check fuel pressure? Not a common issue with this model, but a possibility.

Re: 1997 Town& Country Starts but then shuts off Sign In

I have fuel pressure at the rail before and after. I will run but only for a few seconds and then dies, I will do this over and over . I can rev but it still dies. I know that when I turn the key on and the digital gauges don't come on it wont run. One other thing has troubled me, I have had to put 2 alternator on it and a new battery. The one thats on it now is only a month or so old. I don't understand the gauges not working or what could be the cause. Thank for the help.

It sounds like you may have a bad dash cluster. That will usually activate the theft deterrent when that happens and that's exactly how they act.

lethal; Hopefully, one of the other guys will see this and jump in. The digital guages problem puzzles me. But, you need to monitor fuel pressure and spark during cranking. Not just before and after. Don't know if the two problems are connected. Sorry. A faulty crank sensor can cause a lack of spark, an ASD relay can cause a loss of fuel pressure, but at this point, I'm only guessing. Wish I could be of more help.Unsure

I checked fuel pressure today, it stayed up as long as it runs. It doesn't spit and sputter it just starts and runs then just shuts off.

Re: 1997 Town& Country Starts but then shuts off Sign In

I wanted to give an update. Ive been thinking about the dash and my mothers car done the same thing happen a few years ago and the repair shop said that the contacts were worn and it needed shimming or have it replaced. Well I went out after church and beat the dash not to hard but the gauges bounced turn the key and everything lit up and it started. I let it set for about 45 minutes while I went to the store and come back, it was still running but no gauges and the abs and alarm set lights were on, Cut it off tried to restart and no gauges it started but run a little rough, Cut off hit the dash and everything back on and has run fine. There has to be a reason for this. If anyone has anything that could help it would be great. Thanks.

Thanks for the help it is still starting and running so far. I will start to search for a dash cluster. Does anyone know if there are any places that refurbish dash clusters? Or if these just have to be replaced. Thanks again.

Yes, that's what the dealer does. I don't think you can buy one your self. The dealer has to send in your VIN# and mileage when they order it.
