1997 Mazda 626 overheated/won't start!

I recently purchased a 1997 Mazda 626, it was fine at first, just idled a little rough. Then it started going from hot to cold randomly, but would even out in the middle after you drove it for a little bit. I replaced the theromostat and it started staying in the hot, but the engine didn't feel hot/overheated after I drove it. Then about a week ago it started acting wierd in the mornings (the temperature dropped from about 80 to freezing, so I assumed it was the weather) In order to start the car, you had to start it, pump the gas, and then let it idle for a few minutes, then it would run. My wife drove it to work the other morning and it overheated, and then wouldn't start. We put more water in it, and tightened a radiator hose that had come loose and tried to drive it home. It died on the way home and now it won't start at all. I'm thinking I need a new head gasket, but after I replace that I still need to know why it was overheating in the first place?

Guess: It was the head gasket to begin with. You may have to complete that job now to know more. If run too hot too long - ign secondary parts and electronics exposed to that don't like it. Bet there's no spark now and need to chase that down too,
