1997 Jeep U-Joint replacing Sign In

1997
Jeep
Cherokee Country 4x4
4.0 Litre Six
205000

Hello. Shop told me this: Axle Shaft Inner Universal Joint replace - right and left $32.49x2. Labour: 6 hours. (Canadian funds)

Wheel bearing - hub type $166..76. Labour 1 hour.

Does the labour time seem reasonable? Thank you.

Re: 1997 Jeep U-Joint replacing Sign In

The labor is a bit outrageous......

The flat rate for both sides is only 3.3 hours

Universal Joint Replace Front Axle U-Joint Type

One Side B 2.0
Both Sides B 3.3

Wheel Hub Replace Front Hub & Bearing One Side B 0.9

Hammer; Hey, it's cold up there. They work slower.

95 degrees and 95% humidity tends to slow you down too.

OMG! That wouldn't slow me down, it'd kill me. Rather have the cold. LOL.

Re: 1997 Jeep U-Joint replacing Sign In

Thanks for the responses. I emailed another garage and asked them about labour costs. He replied:

"Does the vehicle have universal joints or constant velocity joints. If it has u-joints there should only be outers (by the wheels)"

The original shop report says "axle shaft inner universal joint replace - Right & Left"

So now I don't know if I have U or CV joints!

If you have C/V joints, the he wouldn't even be changing joints, he would just exchange the axle with a reman and the labor would be even cheaper.
Look under the truck, if it has a solid tube axle like the rear one, then they are u-joints.

Thanks. Another shop says they are outer double cardan joint (universal joints) and estimates 2-4 for the pair.

Re: 1997 Jeep U-Joint replacing Sign In

I took it to another shop that has a very good reputation. They recommended replacing both U-Joints and wheel bearings. 4 hours for the joints - 2 for the bearings. After I said it was a bit much for me right now, they said that the right U-Joint was critical. The rest of the stuff was not. So they replaced that - 2 hours labour.

The Jeep steers fine and there is no noise or clanking. I guess there's a difference between what needs replacing and what "desperately" needs replacing. It was nice that they gave me that option.

Thanks for all the replies.

Yes, that was the best way for the shop to handle it.
