1997 Jeep Cherokee won't start

My problem started this past Sunday. My car was running and it stopped suddenly. After five minutes it started up again. Yesterday the same problem happened. I tried to jump my car but it wouldn't take a charge. I put a new battery in and it would turn over, but the car wouldn't idle, it would stop when I took my foot off of the gas.
