The idle speed is controlled by the computer, via various sensors. The first thing I'd check would be the fuel filter. Have the computer scanned for any stored trouble codes. Check engine light on? A fuel injection cleaning may help, and if hasn't been done in the past 40K miles, should be done anyway. (not the snake oil that they sell to put in the gas tank).
