I have a 1997 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer V6. I got an Overheat alert so I pilled to the side of the road, as soon as the tranny downshifted the temp guage went to normal. I also have an OD Off light flashing. I assume it is not the engine overheating but the transmission. I am leaking coolant but it doesn't seem to be venting from the radiator. Are the transmission and engine cooling systems interconnected?

Thanks in advance

Your transmission is cooled in a heat exchanger mounted inside the radiator. I have never seen a trans run hot enough to heat an engine like that. It would fry like an egg before it could do that. Get the system pressure checked to find out where the coolant is leaking from. They can get expensive if left to get worse, one good overheat can be rebuild time for the motor and I'm sure you don't want that. OD off light is probably flashing because high temp logic is active in the ECM for the temp and its trying to protect itself. Get the coolant leak fixed and pull the trouble codes. Post the exact code numbers up here for us to look at and we can tell you the next step to take.

Most use the engine's radiator to cool and moderate trans fluid temp.

What temp gauge went to normal. OK - out of this biz for a long time now but don't think trans has it's own gauge but rather will set a code and light on many that it happened or is happening. Heat is a trans enemy. Fluid can varnish up and who knows what damage?

Just said on another thread about overheating - it's a killer to engines and trans surely wont like it either,
