1997 Dodge Dakota burns oil constantly black

I've had the truck for about 5 years. The guy before me swears he changed the oil regularly, but evidence suggests otherwise. After about 10,000 miles (odo. 129,000) into my ownership, the oil pressure gauge dropped to zero. I immediately pulled over and had it towed home. With a little help from a friend with an engine hoist, we managed to get off the oil pan and check out the screen and pump. The screen had about 1/4" of gunk clogging it. The pump seemed fine, but replaced it anyway. Cleaned the screen and the pan, flushed the engine with some clean oil, put on a new gasket, put it all back together, and everything returned to normal, except that it burns oil (like every 500 to 750 miles it needs a quart) , the oil is always black, even right after oil changes, and the oil pressure has dropped to zero a couple times since, threatening what happened before. I now have around 150,000 miles on it. The engine runs a little noisy, and I expect it is because of some damage to the heads from the oil issue, but not sure. I have been tempted to run an engine flush through or use the kerosene and oil mixture (50/50) 5 min. idle flush, but have been hesitant due to the warnings about old or damaged engines, and what might happen to the rings.
I want to take care of it, but am with limited resources right now, and taking apart the engine and getting it serviced is, most likely, OOTQ. Also, I am visiting AZ right now from TN, and can't afford to lose the truck or have it go out on me on the way. Any ideas?

You might want to try a product called Restore---------available at auto parts stores. Be sure and get the can that says theproduct for the number of cylinders you have. Ask the guys at the auto parts store what they suggest for the symptons? Some of these guys are very knwoledgeable. Good luck!
