I tried to back my camry up a hill and did it quickly, when i got to the top of the hill my car kept making a grinding noise, only while in reverse though. It also doesnt catch the brake very quickly now when i put it in park.....what happened, what did i mess up?

Perhaps motor mounts or linkage allowed car to move and be close between park and reverse and the parking "paul" was ratcheting away - was it a wild grind! That "paul" is not a brake but a spring loaded wedge to hold trans still and will jump if forced and may have broken it or worn it so it won't mesh so easily any more. Not sure but it's a possibility?? T

If that pic shows you can see the parking catch is not a brake but just gets wedged in a slot and can jump out of that when forced - it's not a brake but a way to stop the trans from turning which does hold a car but all suggestions say to use parking brake and not rely on this alone. It shouldn't be able to engage that actuator unless in the "park" postion but if there was a problem with adjustment it might have been in there AND still in reverse which about never happens. You may be best off to get a trans shop to check this out and see if it could be adjusted or whether it has to come apart. Sure wouldn't be good to have broken parts get tossed around what might still be a good trans?? T
