Was running great before this. Drove about 1 mile, car started hesitating, turned car around to go back home; before got home temp gauge began rising. Now can't even get the motor to turn over.

Please - define "turn over" as that can mean won't start or won't even crank and would be all different. Check coolant level at the radiator. Is it full? Never mind the recovery tank you need to know if radiator is full. How hard did it overheat? If bad enough it will cause engine problems. Overheating that quickly suggests you were near out of coolant. Leak or gasket remains unknown. So will it crank or nothing at all right now? Oil ok? T

Won't even crank. Started heating up in less than 1 mile. No steam or anything like that. Did not drive over 1 mile when started getting hot.

Check oil level and coolant level at radiator. That's awful fast to overheat so something whacked seems to have happened. Just what happens when you do turn the key to "crank" the engine? Nothing? Machine gun clicking of starter or one solid snap as it tries? It would have to be about void of oil for whatever reason to have ceased up and could do it that fast without oil. Nothing matters even if there's no fuel or spark going on if battery and starter doesn't react to the attempt to start it up. That if nothing is happening at all is step one. Again - make sure the oil reads at least at the "add a quart" line and we can think of what to do next. I'm still thinking of what would produce so much heat so fast and now am thinking (it's all guessing right now) that the engine may have ceased up from lack of lubrication for whatever reason it would still make some reaction in trying so explain what. Battery needs be known ok - charge it or jump it as needed with a donor vehicle. This should be a 3.8 V6 engine and so far they've been pretty dependable of the ones I've known. Most engine's don't just suddenly quit without some warning and all we have for now is a fast overheat. Need to know more............ T

Put a bar on the crank and make sure you can turn the engine over by hand..........

Coolant was low; added 3/4 of a gallon. Checked oil; it was fine. Jumped with other vehicle; would not start. When turning the key, clunks one time.
