1997 Blazer loses power on hills

 1997 Chevrolet Blazer
4 WD Automatic
4.3 L V6 CPI OHV
119,844 miles
When driving up long sustained inclines (> one mile), I will experience a loss of power. In fact, it is as if I was in neutral. When I depress the accelerator, I can hear the engine still running.
If I pull over and let the vehicle sit for a while, I am able to proceed.
