96 nissan pickup battery wont stay charged. I already replaced battery and alternator. If I run any accessory like lights, heater, wipers etc. , the battery dies rapidly. sometimes it will start and sometimes it won't. what could be wrong?

What is the charging voltage across the battery at idle with no accessories on?

just a little below normal. truck runs as long as I dont use lights etc., If I run any accessories it dies quickly. sometimes it will start right up and others it wont and I have to jump it or pop start it.

I'm not looking for "normal". I was a digital volt reading.

I'm not a mechanic and I don't recall what the exact reading was. the guy just said it was a little below normal.

Then you just need to take it back to the guy. I can't help you if you're not even able to take a measurement.

I think he said it was supposed to run at 13.5 and mine was at 12.8. something like that. does that help you?

Yes, that is exactly what I was looking for and it appear the system isn't charging and the alternator was probably changed for no reason. It needs to be diagnosed correctly now to find the actual reason it isn't charging. 13.5 is acceptable but it really should be a little higher than that. A little over 14 is the norm.

Matt - I know most folks don't want to get a ton of test stuff. For plain volts they make a thing that just pushes in a cig lighter or power port that at least one I have is remarkably accurate for plain volts. If nothing else for the $10-$12 bucks it's better info than a vehicle's gauges or confirms them or warning lights which you should be getting some icon right around there and bet it drops lower at idle with everything running.

As HT said, it has to be tested out - even new items may be the problem still, -- T

I think 2 misdiagnosis is enough. Have someone with some electrical knowledge check it out.

Do you have access to a multimeter? With the truck running, put one lead on battery positive and the other lead on the alternator output stud. With the meter set at DC volts, note the reading at idle and at 2000 RPM.
