1996 dodge 1500 needs help!

My son has a 96 dodge 1500 5.7 liter 360, he ran it out of oil and it is now smoking like a chimney! We removed the oil filter and cut it open and found what could be shavings from the rings. There wasn't really enough to be sure though. It starts and turns over with no problems, what I would like to know is if this is the rings and piston. Also, if it is, how much am I looking at as far as repairs? PLEASE HELP!

my question is how you run it out of oil do you have a bad oil leak did it parr up inside do you need valve seals. ?
