1996 Honda Accord - Cruise, Alarm and ABS questions/issues Sign In

Hello!

I just purchased a new to me :-) 96 Honda Accord with 160,000 miles. I've had it for a few weeks now a couple issues have popped up that I didn't notice at the dealer.

1. The cruise control will only work intermittently. I would say 15% of the time. When I push the cruise button it always lights up. However, when I hit set, it usually does nothing - the light near the speedometer doesn't light up, but the cruise button stays lit. When it does work, it will randomly disengage after 10 minutes or so and then won't work again. I've checked the fuse and also made sure the brake lights work (a friend told me to check)

2. The car has a Honda alarm system installed. The keyless entry randomly won't let me unlock the car (usually if I keep hitting the button 15 or 20 times it will eventually let me in) When this happens the alarm status light on the steering column just keeps flashing. There is a valet disarm switch that doesn't seem to work at all. So, if my remote decides not to work, my alarm goes off when I use my key to open the door, I can't turn it off and I can't start my car until my remote decides to work. I'm afraid I'm gonna get stuck somewhere. I put a new battery in the remote already. I actually dont even care about the alarm system. Could I just pull it, or is it more complicated than that? Also, the remote is the one that goes with the alarm system, so if I pull it, is there a way to keep keyless entry?

3. Yesterday, my ABS light came on and has been on since. Is there anything fairly easy I can check on my own regarding that or should I just take it somewhere? No other symptoms, just the light.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm don't know much about cars but I'm fairly adventurous when it comes to trying things and I'm prett good at knowing when I'm over my head and to stop and call the shop. I've done basic things such as installing stereos, changing my oil and filters, etc.

Thanks in advance for your help! I really appreciate it!

Does the dealer have any responsibility for the car where you live? At the miles and age it may be exempt from anything even from a dealer and can't say place to place what the rules are.

I'd go back where you bought it and see what can be done. To heck with diddle squat things but not be able to disarm the alarm is nasty and the ABS can be scanned on a 96 for codes as to the problem area,

Unfortunately, it's an AS IS - NO WARRANTY situation. The dealer is indeed exempt from anything with a car this age (in Illinois)

Do you know of anything I can do myself, or should I just break down and take it to the shop?

Guess is you need some pro help to eliminate some stuff and diag the ABS. Here (I'm shocked) you can do without ABS as default should be regular braking. Other items need attention and no way I could guess on a web site,
