1996 Grand Caravan Brake Failure Sign In

Got in the van to go out one day and the pedal went to the floor. No brake warning lights or ABS light on. Changed Master Cylinder and it didn't make any difference. I read something about dump valve in accumulator not closing all the way having this affect. It appears it has an internal problem and is to costly to replace. I'm looking for information on what I need to remove my 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan ABS System. Do I need anything other than a split manifold (AKA Pressure differential switch)? The van has two proportional valves in the rear already. I'm just not sure if I need any type of metering valve. If I were to look for it at the junkyard what should I look for.

Kirk; I've never heard of an accumulator malfunction causing the pedal to go to the floor. Loss of primary cup pressure in the master, yes. Did you replace the master with a new one, reman, or used? Are you sure that you've gotten all of the air out of the system? I would strongly advise against defeating the ABS. Not sure about your state, but I know that in WA and OR, it is illegal to sell used brake hydraulic parts. For a good reason. If you are having an accumulator problem, which I doubt, you should be getting ABS codes. If you are, post them here, and we'll try and help with diagnostics.

Loren,

Had to come back for different help so I thought I would let you know what happened. I took it to a dealer and they diagnosed an ABS pump failure. Picked up a used ABS unit at the junk yard for 25 bucks, installed it, and that took care of the brake problem. There were never any warning lights even though the pedal would go all the way to the floor.

Thanks,

Kirk - appreciate your posting a fix. I don't really suggest used brake parts but understand the costs of some stuff new being horrific!
