Hello Everyone!
My 1996 GMC Jimmy Headlamps will not come on after turning on my Headlamp switch. When I turn on the switch, all other lights come on, but the headlamps do not. The daytime lights turn off. The only thing I have done is replace the headlamp switch. Can anybody out there help me with this? Please reply!

If neither high or low beam work on either side I would first check to see if there is a relay/fuse or both (check owner's manual) as these bulbs use a lot of juice and there might be one for them. If not, check for both power and ground at the sockets for more info - post back if you still don't find a problem. Good luck,

Tom,
I will check for low/high beam activity. I do know that the daytime lights work, just when I turn the nighttime lights on. I'm trying desperately to fix the matter myself before I have to get someone to work on it.

Do you think it is a major problem Tom?

Tom,
Do you think it is common for both lights to not operate at the same time? Also, I checked the owner's manual, and it states the headlamp wiring is protected by an internal circuit breaker, and a electrical overload will cause the lamps to go on and off, sometimes remain off, and to get my wiring checked. It just seams strange that both headlamps just stopped. I will admit that I have not checked the headlamps themselves yet. I will in the morning. I found the fuse block; cannot find where the cirucit breakers are located.

When both go out at once it's not usually the bulbs. Trust you owner's manual (they are much better that they used to be) for locations and correct amperage for fuses and lots more info in there in general.

If there's a circuit breaker, it should reset. The relay and fuse items can just blow. Try taking one bulb out at a time and test headlights. If others work when one is removed that would be a good clue as to location of problem. Don't touch the glass of a halogen bulb - use paper or clean gloves - and if it looks black it's probably blown. Take a look for damage from over heating. They get wicked hot normally but would shut down with a short or a problem socket or bulb and you would lose both.

Test lights and jumper wire (cheap stuff) is available at Wal-Mart and other similar stores. Test light, >5 bucks, set of jumper wires about 3 bucks. They will use alligator clips at the ends, you need to test the light first to make sure you have a good connection. - like between battery posts.

You need your headlights - duh - and if it means you need the help of a shop just find a reputable one. Dealers can be great but so can independants. At worst - you are already an informed customer! If you want to email me at my main address - still available here and we can talk. Just use a subject line from CarJunky as some I don't open but have all the anti stuff known so I really not too scared. Good luck with the fix, here to help as best I can,

Tom,
I did as you suggested, and it worked! Once I put in the new switch, I didn't even operate the low/high beams. When I clicked them on, the lights operated. I just happened to find this website by mistake, but I am very, very glad I did. Thank you Tom for your valuable knowedge, and I will always come to you FIRST, before I consult anywhere else.
