The brake pedal on our car just went to the floor and we weren't able to stop. The brakes "soft of" work, but only if I push really hard with my foot. What do you think happened? How do you think it can be fixed? I found a lot of dripping from the middle rear underside of the car. I don't really know what runs through there, though.

It sounds like one of your brake lines rusted through. You have a dual system so you are stopping on 2 wheels only.

You will have to get it looked at. The lines have to be fabricated using double flare, screw together fittings only and then bleed out the system.

nwsterling; Check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder. From your description, it sounds as if you've broken a brake line if the leak is mid-ship. Brake fluid is distributed to all four wheels via steel brake lines. Then, flexible rubber hoses at the front wheels, and at the rear axle, and the rear wheels (if you have disc brakes in the rear). I've seen them rust through or damaged from debris on the road. But...this is unsafe to drive, regardless. If you aren't capable of the repairs, I'd recommend having it towed to a shop.
