1996 Dodge 318magnum pinging

1996 Dodge 318magnum pinging Sign In

I have a 1996 Dodge B2500 w/318 Magnum. The van has approximately 135,000 miles. It starts and runs like a top. Plenty of power. The problem that i am having is: The van pings when put under a load, or when climbing a small grade. It also pings alot on hard acceleration. I am needing to know how to time the engine. I know i cannot time the engine by moving the distributor. When i check the timing with my timing light, it is not even in the range of the pointer. The pointer has 5 degrees before, Top dead Center, and 5 degrees after. The mark on the balancer is at about 8 degrees or so to the left of TDC. Any help is greatly appreciated in this timing ordeal i am having. Thanks

The timing is controlled by the computer. You can't "change" it. Check your owner's manual; I'm pretty certain that you should be using 89 octane, minimum. "ping" is caused by heat. The lower the octane, the higher the combustion temperature. Anything that causes higher combustion temps can cause the ping. The EGR valve is designed to introduce inert exhaust gasses into the combustion chamber to lower the temperature, so if the EGR valve is not working, can cause the problem. Worn spark plugs (wide gap, ect). Lean condition (air doesn't burn too good). Generally speaking, good quality fuel of the appropriate octane, tuned engine, and combustion chamber cleaning should do the trick if you don't have any mechanical problems. Once you've tuned it, have an injection service done. The best on the market right now is called a Motor Vac. The machine is made by Snap-On and is an excellent service. You'll notice an improvement in fuel economy and performance if you haven't had it done in the past 40K.
