My son was driving his 1995 saturn SL2 home from work last night. It died suddenly. Did not make any noise, has a full tank of gas, weather cold (12 degrees), and now will not start. He says it makes a whining noise and then quits. Any ideas?

A guess you don't want to hear: Cold might have been the straw to allow a neglected rubber timing belt to break. Engine would sound funny or interferrence engines damage valves or more and may not crank overUnsure

Hope not,

Thanks for the advice, but the saturn has a timing chain. Suppose it could have broken, but my son says no noise, no nothing. It just died and coasted to a stop. No service engine lite either. Still baffeled

Does that mean it cranks and makes a whining noise but doesn't start? It is true that real chains don't usually just up and break. I find they give more symptoms even if they are the problem.

So just when does this noise happen and does the engine crank/turn at all? If you look at regular belts the engine is turning - need to know that,

I suggested that he try to jump start it thinking the battery might be weak. After this attempt it makes no noise at all. The key turns and now there is no noise. Acts like the starter solenoid may be gone, but this does not explain the sudden loss of power before. Sorry for the explanation being iffy. Working through this over the phone. Car is at my son's house.

Ok: Has the car lost all electrical power? That would shut the car down. You're right - the solonoid is just the connection to the starter. Battery cables at all ends must be clean and tight, a jump may still be needed as the battery could be down now and if it starts up check the charging volltage, and condition of battery itself. they can short out inside - more likely when older. How old is it?

If the engine was trying to stay on and then died. You flooded the engine, give it gas while starting it, To clear it, I have a 95 Saturn, in the cold it did that cause the Throttle Position Sensor, and both Temperature Sensors needed changing. Get aftermarket parts, the ones from the dealership are garbage. If the engine gets too hot, its time to do the thermostat, and waterpump. Very easy job.
