1995 nissan quest power steering problems

I was driving yesterday and suddenly my steering went very stiff. i could not make a turn. This all happened suddenly, but luckly i made it home. I dont have any idea why this may have happened, but im hoping that you guys can help me. thanks and any help is much appericated

First off you should check to make sure the power steering belt is ok. If it is, ensure the p/s pump's pulley is turning. If it is, check the reservoir to make sure the p/s fluid is full, you shouldn't notice a lot of bubbles in it either. Too many bubbles means air in system. If all of these check out ok, you will need to tee in a pressure guage to check pump output into the rack. If the pump checks out ok, make sure the lines aren't clogged or collapsed. Next, jack up front of vehicle and remove outer tie rod ends from steering knuckle. Ensure front wheels turn back and forth freely. A frozen ball joint or binding strut mount can cause major turning issues. If all checks out, replace steering rack. Steve

I know in Mass and New Hampshire most shops are open. You'd have to call around to know for sure. Steve
