1995 dodge neon with locking brakes	Sign In

I have a 1995 neon with brakes that begin to lock up after about ten minutes of driving, and i have to press the gas pedal hard just to make the car move. plus there is a smell of burning. Please HELP!

Sounds like calibers are not releasing the pads,has any repairs been made lately to the brakes? In most cases you need to have them relpace along with the lines going to the caliber and if delayed in so doing rotors/wheelbearings will be damaged from the heat its creating

thanks, i just bougt this car so im not sure what repairs have been made. there were two cut wires that led to the brakes. i repaired the wires but it has not helped.

so you think the caliper needs to be replaced? How do I tell which one?

If both are dragging it's unlikely the calipers. One at a time sure can. Can you tell by it pulling to one side or the other when braking? One wheel may feel warmer than the other as a clue also.

If one drags only it would be that caliper or the hose to just that one. Dave mentioned the hoses. If you just crack open a bleeder on one that's sticky in front of you and it frees right up the hose is highly likely. If they both get to dragging I would see if there is one common flex hose for both front brakes or if master cylinder looks new it could be a problem - rare but I've had some now allow fluid back after braking or when fluid just expands from warming up.

Chrysler flare nuts are particularly troublesome with rusting and require a new metal line end made up when they need to be removed for replacing hoses.
