Okay, so start to end here. the car was running and as I was turning into the parking lot it died. I was able to start it up and pulled into a parking spot. ran into store did my errand. came out started car up and as I was backing up it stalled out again. started it up, tried backing up and stalled out again. made third attempt but this time as I was turning key over I got a 'puff' sound like a hose came off.
So we have checked the battery - good. spark plugs - good. coil packet - replaced as of today. timing belt - good.
turn key over and you get what appears as its trying to turn over - just not firing up. I've done this several times (to make an attempt) and I have gotten the 'puff' sound again as well. I have noticed some slight smoke when hood has been up and someone else turning key over come from near where the timing belt area is and around the back of the engine. but really hard to see just where the actual spot its coming from. THe air intake hose has popped off in this process. which to me can be the source of the 'puff' sound - or so one would think.
My step father who has been helping me in this process of trying to get to the source of the problem seems to think that the timing is off??? I am just a gal here who is trying to get to the source of the issue so that I can get back into my own car and able to get to work without having to depend on someone else.
We have a chilton manual and have been trying to go through it as much as we can. Anyone who can give up some ideas of where else we should be looking would be appreciated.

annie; From the description, it sounds like it may be 'backfiring' through the intake. This could be from an over-fueling condition or an ignition problem. Or, as dad suggested, timing. You are going to need to see if it is getting spark during the whole time the ignition is turned. If you get just a spark when you let off of the key, that points to an ignition control module problem. If you get spark the whole time you are cranking, check the plugs to see if they are wet with fuel. If they are, that opens up a pandora's box of possibilities. These are a timing belt driven engine. It's very possible that it has 'jumped' a tooth or two. Or three.Smile Many times, a belt will jump when you turn off the engine. Was running fine, before, but go to start, and whammo. So many possiblilities, just gonna need some more diagnosing. Sorry, no quick answer.

You want to see what you are missing before throwing parts at it. Check for spark & fuel.

From what you describe it sounds like the fuel pump quit working. Just that it started & died a few time & each time ran worse....

If it is a fuel prob....don't just throw a pump at it.... Verify power & ground 1st.......
