1994 Toyota Pickup Overheating	Sign In

Before I had this issue my temperature gauge would go 1/3 of the way up when I started my car and stay there. Now when I drive my truck in the early morning when it is cold out, the temperature gauge stays at cold and then when I get up to speed on the freeway it goes to the red before settling back down in the middle. I took it to the mechanic and he replaced my thermostat. He drove it around during the day and said since it isnt doing it when its warm out, my car cant be overheating. He checked my water pump and fan clutch and said it looks fine. Do you think my temperature gauge is broken, or is this a bigger problem? Also when I drive early in the morning my car is slightly sluggish and starts to shake sometimes when I go into a higher gear, but I replaced my clutch recently so I know its not that.

Trying to read between the lines with this and it seems temp you see is not the actual engine temp. When you start up from cold it should slowly go to it's pre-set spot and pretty much stay there. If too quick or erratic it MAY not be a correct reading.

Feeling the output temp of heater on full temp is a fair indicator if nothing else. Real overheats will quit throwing heat as it's bubbling boiling coolant if so.

You said you notice it doesn't always run properly in early morning use for a while so I'll guess the sender for the temp is sending the wrong info - engine may think it's already warmed up or still cold and adjustments don't match the real condition so YES - I'd be replacing sensor(s) for temp AND watching that you aren't really ever overheating by use of heater if nothing else,

Tom is probably more in line for this post.

but i had an experience close to yours, where i had a small crack in the plastic filler neck on my radiator. long story short it was letting air into the system when the plastic got hot enough to expand.

drove me nuts for a while. the temp needle would jump all over the place and up to the red zone.

so try purging/bleeding your coolant system to see if there are any air bubbles in there. cant hurt, doest cost you anything except time.
