You must hold it (better yet, have the wife hold it) about 1/4-3/8" away from a ground so that the spark has to jump the gap. If she gets zapped, run very fast. (and try not to laugh..out loud) If you truly have no spark, does the engine sound as if it's cranking over much faster than normal? You may want to remove the upper timing cover to inspect the belt.
